Zincite is a zinc oxide and is rare and inconspicuous at other locations in the world other than the famous zinc and manganese mines of the Sterling Hill and Franklin, New Jersey. Many rare minerals are found there and zincite although rare everywhere else, is far from rare there. So abundant was zincite that it was exploited as an important ore of zinc. This zincite formed by accident in the smoke stacks of a zinc manufacturing facility of zinc-based paint in Silesia, Poland. Due to cracks in the smelter walls, the conditions became just right for the formation of zincite crystals on the insides of the smoke stacks. Changes in temperature and air pressure inside the furnace created conditions supporting spontaneous growth of these crystals in air vents and chimney channels.
Both natural and synthetic zincite crystals are significant for their early use as semiconductor crystal detectors in the early development of crystal radios before the advent of vacuum tubes. As an early radio detector it was used in a junction with another mineral, chalcopyrite, and the combination was known as the Perikon detector.
Metaphysical properties: personal power, physical energy and creativity. Stimulates electric currents within the body. Helps remove energy blockages. Promotes cooperation. Increases mental clarity and perception. A highly charged crystal.
